The hair follicle growth cycle consists of different phases. During the first phase a hair grows around half an inch a month. At the end of this phase, your hair enters to a short transitional phase. Then, your hair goes in the resting phase and eventually falls out. Finally, the follicle remains inactive for 3 months (a “sleeping” stage), before the whole process is repeated. Each hair follicle is independent and goes through the growth cycle at different times — otherwise all your hair would fall out at once.
Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn’t result in the permanent all hairs removal because hair follicles are at the different stages of the growing cycle. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair. The Laser hair removal is less effective for hair colors that don’t absorb light well: gray, red, blond and white.

How to prepare for laser hair removal.
- Stay out of the sun. Follow your doctor’s advice for avoiding sun exposure, usually up to six weeks before treatment, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
- Avoid other hair removal methods.Plucking, waxing and electrolysis can disturb the hair follicle and should be avoided at least four weeks before treatment.
- Trim and shave the day before laser treatment. It removes hair above the skin and leaves the hair shaft intact below the surface.
What you can expect
- Laser hair removal usually requires a series of treatments. The interval between treatments will vary depending on the location. On areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip, the treatment might be repeated in four to eight weeks. On areas of slow hair growth, such as the back, the treatment might be every 12 to 16 weeks.
After the procedure
- You might notice redness and swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal.
To reduce any discomfort, apply ice to the treated area. After laser hair removal and between scheduled treatments, avoid sun exposure — both natural sunlight and tanning beds at least for six weeks. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.

- Hairs do not fall out immediately, but you will shed them over a period of days to weeks. The repeated treatments are usually necessary because hair growth and loss naturally occur in a cycle. Laser treatment works best with hair follicles in the first, new-growth stage and least effective at the “sleeping “stage. Because some of hair follicles are at the “sleeping” stage you might need maintenance laser treatments for long-term hair reduction.
